About Illustrated Journalism:

Telling stories using narrative imagery is not a new thing. It’s important that these visual journalists not be forgotten. Bill Russell writes about the work of these artists and their legacy in Histories of Reportage.

He also writes and shows some of his own reportage, and the reportage of others. Here’s the Archive. Climate Change and Travel are important subcategories.

You can read all of his Illustrated Journalism essays in the format of your choice: as a newsletter in your inbox, as a webpage where it will resemble a blog, or by using the Substack app.

About Bill Russell:

Bill comes from a small town near Toronto, Canada. He moved to New York to earn his degree in Illustration from Parsons School of Design. After graduation Bill became a freelance illustrator of books, magazine and advertising. He moved to San Francico, where he became an Adjunct Professor of Illustration at the California College of the Arts and a staff artist at the San Francisco Chronicle.

Bill works in a variety of creative skill sets, as an illustrator, designerpainter and visual journalist. He completed artist residencies at Recology in San Francisco and at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. He’s always drawing and telling stories with his drawings. He also creates abstract and figurative paintings and shows them in a variety of settings, including Stanford University, SFMoMA Artists Gallery, Sofie Contemporary in Calistoga, and the Reactor Gallery in Toronto, Canada.

In this interview with the great Steven Heller Bill talks about his history as an illustrator and the great historical reportage artists he writes about for this Substack. Bill lives with my wife Christine in a restored Eichler home in Marin County, California.
