Great sketches and profiles of the essential cabbies! When I lived in Paris, I loved chatting with the cab drivers, or else just gazed out of the window and enjoyed the - usually speedy - ride. The occasional one would be bitter and grumpy as hell, of course.

Thanks Marta. Cabbies can be tour guides, philosophers, therapists...

Love this. So positive and heart warming. Connecting rather than dividing and "othering". The world needs more of this right now, and always. Jo 🙏

When I lived in SF I sold my car and used the reliable taxis. When I was ready for conversation, they were with me. When I didn't want or need conversation, they generally understood that too. But there was always a story at the ready. Taxis are part of the fabric of the city. Love your pictures!

Appreciated your article. I just returned from Las Vegas, attending The Big Smoke, and experienced both Taxi and Uber drivers. It was an interesting juxtaposition. The Taxi drivers were talkative, offering suggestions on where to eat and even asking if we needed to stop at the liquor store. The Uber drivers were quiet, almost surly, and perfunctory. I chalked it up to the difference between full time and partime though I have no idea if that was the case. The ride back to the airport we had a pleasant taxi driver who was a fellow cigar smoker who recommended a cigar bar for us to check out next time.
