His watercolours are masterful, but what really put him on the map for so many of us aspiring illustrators were his biting, acerbic, witty, magnificent character/caricatures in line.
David Levine was an artist who understood our shared humanity both in his caricature drawings (the good, the bad and the ugly), and his beautiful detailed watercolours. And as an equal to many illustrative journalist, I would like to thank you, Bill, again for your Histories of Reportage that so many of your followers enjoy reading...
Thank you. The art is quite revealing of Levine's true character & love for ordinary people. Love the different stages of the rollercoaster. I've been to Coney Island twice many years ago. Brings back memories. Most appreciative for all the new things you bring about art, people and places.
Way back in the 80's, I had a hard time believing that the same guy that did the caricatures did those great watercolors of Coney Island. Time to pull the Art of David Levine book off the shelf!
These Levine watercolours are something truly special.
agreed!

True that, Blair. Any artist today that comes close to his level of biting, acerbic, witty, and magnificent?
Lovely--what I love is the way he captures the happy moods of crowds.
happy mass of humanity

Thank you J. Lynn. Levine's caricatures had heart and his bathers heart of a different kind.

Thanks for the lovely comment. I think Levine realized that the roller coaster was a metaphor for his own life.
Thanks for showing David Levine's work. I've never been to Coney Island, but feel as if I visited through his art. I love his watercolors !
Thanks Susan. Definitely a bygone era.

The David Levine book shows both of his creative endeavors and both superlative.
Such lyricism in the crowd scenes, the movement and the tone. Those rollercoasters are phenomenal.
Yes! Levine could manage a crowd, and design a picture.
